To harvest is not only to take, but to produce, in an ongoing cycle interlacing all natural systems. HARVEST HOME is an ecologically-responsible home that harvests and replenishes nature’s gifts to create a deeply rooted connection to the natural environment, the human spirit, and the well-being of future generations. Our home produces energy, sustaining itself as well as the person who lives in it. Through different systems, it gains energy from the environment and replenishes what it uses.

One of the main goals of Team Capitol DC is to educate the public and students about the accessibility and affordability of solar-powered homes.  We hope to teach the student student participants from all three universities about the process involved in the design, construction, and operation of a physical project with an end client.

The home is separated into two modules, public and private, whose primary goals are to create a physical and sensory connection with nature. Surrounding the home are various decks that extend the living spaces, blending the interior with the exterior and expanding our overall footprint.

HARVEST HOME reconnects the veteran with the American environment and community, through the creation of an interconnected lifestyle with both the house’s functionality and its relationship with nature.

By treating these outdoor spaces as additional “living and dining rooms,” we can double the usable space of the home. With rich landscaping, easy to use energy-efficient systems, and net zero initiatives, HARVEST HOME will create a healing environment for the veteran to clam the mind, body, and spirit.

Team Capitol DC will use innovative technology and engineering to help heal the environment and the user by creating a net-zero home that HARVESTS as much energy as it produces. The home’s occupant, a U.S. war veteran, will be able to engage in a visual understanding of how to “harvest” and contribute to healing the environment and saving energy through displays provided by our centralized control system. Additionally, the architectural design of the home hopes to create a healing environment for our veteran client. By creating moments throughout the home, HARVEST HOME will encourage the resident to utilize his or her five senses, connecting to the natural world and establishing a healthy and healing lifestyle.

Harvest SUN

The home HARVESTS the suns energy through it’s photovoltaic array and solar thermal system to both produce energy and heat our water.

Harvest ENERGY

Through heat and energy recovery, our home is able to HARVEST excess heat from our solar panels and appliances, reusing it instead of putting it to waste.

Harvest WATER

Our home has a rain screen to prohibit the infiltration of moisture and a rainwater collection system to HARVEST water in effort to replenish the landscape as well as utilize gray water within the home.

Harvest WIND

Natural ventilation HARVESTS wind to create a comfortable environment, particularly in the hot climate of Irvine, California.

The home owner can grow and HARVEST fruits and vegetables to encourage a healthy and self-sustaining life-style.

HARVESTED Materials throughout our home are reused and reclaimed, thus lowering our embodied energy content.
